Workshop Session 4: 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm

Jump Start Your Students GED Success!
Presenters: Mary Lou Brown, Adult Literacy Lead Teacher, Greece Community Education,
Joanne Johnson, Adult Literacy Lead Teacher, Greece Community Education
Room: Albany

Get a Jump Start on success by learning about Greece Community Education’s induction class for incoming GED classroom students. New students learn organizational, test taking, goal setting, and time management skills, as well as working on basic math, reading, and writing. We will discuss how this program has improved retention and post test rates, and generated NRS gains.

English Immersion Weekend
Presenters: Maria E. Guerrero, Literacy Coordinator, Adult Education Services, Orange- Ulster BOCES,
Veronique L. Dietrich, Teacher, Adult Education Services, Orange-Ulster BOCES
Room: Colonie

One effective way to learn a language is to immerse oneself in speaking and reading for an extended period of time. In 2009, ESL students attended an English Immersion Weekend at Orange-Ulster BOCES. Students attended a variety of fun and interactive activities that “immersed” them in the English Language. Role-playing, language games, Smart Board lessons, as well as eating meals together enabled students to engage in English and to feel more comfortable communicating and thinking in English.

The Marriage of Education and Work Experience
Presenters: Lacey Thomas, BRIDGE Case Manager, Fulton-Montgomery Community College,
Diane Luckey, BRIDGE Case Manager, Fulton-Montgomery Community College,
Laura Lander, BRIDGE Coordinator, Fulton-Montgomery Community College
Room: Schenectady

Are you looking to develop a program to assist your clients with employment? Are you frustrated by meeting the educational needs of your clients while balancing work participation requirements under TANF? Through this workshop find new ways of marrying hands-on job skills training with a daily worksite component.

Transitioning to Post Secondary Education and the Workplace: A Focus on Mathematical Skills – Part 2
Presenters: Connie Schwein, Regional Representative for Steck-Vaughn Publishers,
Linda Correnti, Principal, Manhattan Access GED Program
Room: Salon A

Earning a GED is no longer viewed as an end goal, but rather the opening of a door to postsecondary education, training programs, and the 21ST Century workplace. Where does the responsibility of adult educators end and the responsibility of postsecondary programs begin? What does it take to be “career to college ready” in mathematics? This session will focus on the mathematical skills necessary for students to move successfully into postsecondary training and the workplace, as well as provide sample materials for use in the classroom.

NYS & NRS Reporting – Part 2
Presenter: Rosemary Matt, NRS Liaison for NYS
Room: Salon B & C

This time will be dedicated to offering a comprehensive overview of the NYS Report Card, the NYS NRS Report and program level data. Rosemary will review program targets and benchmarks for FY10, the scoring rubric for FY10 and data collection and reporting policy changes. Learn how NYSED policy decisions shape program practice and an analysis of statewide target vs. program data. She will also answer questions regarding reporting as it informs policy. This is a great opportunity to look at the larger picture of NYS data and how it influences individual programs.

Post-Session Fitness Workshop
4:30 p.m. — 5:30 p.m.

Fitness Walk
Presenter: Maria Chefalo, Director of Community Education, Gates -Chili Central School
Room: Hotel Lobby

Did you know there is a great Community Park with several walking trails behind the Marriott Hotel? Join me and other conference goers and check out the crossings of Colonie Park walking paths. After sitting all day a little physical exercise would do us all good. We will journey along a 1.25 mile path that travels around the area covering a natural trail, orchard, arboretum, meadow, ponds, playgrounds, a neighboring farm, bird watching and other recreational facilities. All are welcome! We will start together then walk at your own pace. Wear sneakers and dress comfortably! Rain or shine – dress for the weather. For more information about the park go to http://www.colonie.org/parks/crossings/index.htm
